The World Poker Tour
The World Poker Tour is exactly what it sounds like. Event organizers arrange for a bunch of poker tournaments that are played all over the world. The goal of the World Poker Tour is to help get all areas of the world interested in the game and to hopefully encourage people to try playing the game. The tour proves that poker is played all over the world and not just places like Las Vegas, Monte Carlo, and Atlantic City.
While the World Poker Tour is supposed to be played all over the world, a lot of the events are held in the United States. The main reason for this is because as of right now the United States has the highest number of poker stars enthusiasts. Hopefully, with the increasing interest in the game in places like France and the United Kingdom, more and more of the tournaments will be scheduled for other parts of the world.
Just because an event is held on a different country, does not mean that fans all over the world cannot watch, learn, and dream of the day when they will be able to play. One of the things that set the World Poker Tour apart from other events is that the whole thing started as a television idea.
While every year the World Poker Tour has been televised, the channels that have covered the event always seem to be changing. The first channel to carry the event was the Travel Channel. After that the Tour was covered by GSN, the same channel that also carries the High Stakes Poker Show. GSN covered throughout the entire fifth season. Now that the series is into its seventh season, it is being aired by Fox Sports Net.
While a majority of the poker players who participate in the tour are professionals who come from all over the globe. There are no rules about who can play. Non-professionals are just as welcome as professionals. There are two ways to get into the tour. The first is through a buy in, which ranges from $2,500 to $25,000. The second is by playing in and winning a satellite tournament that proves that they have the skills to play with the pros.
The World Poker Tour has proven to be more successful than anyone could have possibly imagined. The event has become so successful that there have been a few spin offs. The first spin off is the Women’s World PokerStars Tour which was started in 2008 and was scheduled to have 5 events. Another spin off was the Professional Poker Tour. This looked like it was going to be a popular event that the Travel Channel was going to air, however production was delayed and the entire series eventually fizzled out.
One of the things that the World Poker Tour has created is a World Poker Tour Walk of Fame which honors gifted poker players and people who have helped promote the game of poker. People who are currently honored on the Walk of Fame include James Garner, Gus Hansen, and Doyle Brunson.
